Slow progress of labour

Throughout your labour, your midwife or doctor will be able to monitor your progress by checking how far your cervix has dilated and how far the baby has dropped. If the cervix is opening slowly or your contractions have slowed down or stopped this may mean that your labour is not progressing. There are some things you can do to help get things going;

  • Try and stay calm, anxiety can slow things down
  • Change positions
  • Walk around
  • A warm shower or bath
  • A back rub or heat packs
  • Rest to regain energy
  • Eat something and have a drink

If your labour continues to progress slowly, your doctor or midwife will likely discuss further options to assist with the progress of your labour including pain relief if you are tired and experiencing significant discomfort.
