Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)

The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative was launched in 1991 by the World Health Organization and UNICEF in a global effort to implement practices that protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The initiative provides Baby Friendly Hospitals a framework to operate within called the Ten Steps To Successful Breastfeeding which ensures all mothers receive appropriate support and information to give them the best opportunity to successfully breastfeed their baby.

In a Baby Friendly accredited facility, a baby will not be given breastmilk substitutes, dummies or bottles unless medically indicated or unless the parents have made an informed choice not to breastfeed their baby.

Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, Calvary Public Hospital Bruce and Queanbeyan District Health Service are accredited Baby Friendly Hospitals.
